How to Build a Better Product Shortlist

Efficient spreadsheet research begins with a clear brief and ends with a small set of comparable candidates.

1. Write down non-negotiables

Choose the category, intended use, measurements, acceptable colors and maximum item budget before opening links.

2. Search with descriptive terms

A phrase such as “heavyweight zip hoodie” is more useful than a broad label such as “clothes.” Remove one detail if results are too narrow.

3. Normalize the comparison

For every candidate, record the same fields: source URL, current price, size information, material description, image evidence and unresolved questions.

4. Check category-specific risks

For shoes, review insole length and sole construction. For clothing, compare garment measurements. For bags, inspect dimensions, hardware and closures.

5. Remove weak entries

Discard links with missing specifications, unclear variants or too little evidence. A shorter, well-documented list is easier to use.

6. Recheck the source page

Listings can change after they enter a spreadsheet. Confirm live price, availability and options immediately before taking action.

Put the checklist into practice

Search one category and compare a small set of current product finds.
